Social Bookmarking – What Is It? Is It Useful?

Posted on 24. Jan, 2007 by Andrew Watson in Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren’t shared, merely bookmarks that reference them, and unlike adding bookmarks to your favourites on your computer, social bookmarking links can be accessed online.

Is It Useful?

It is useful for both visitors to your website to bookmark their favourite pages, and also for you as an organisation. Often social bookmarking sites integrate search functionality. If you sell ‘product x’ and someone has bookmarked ‘product x’, users may search a list of bookmarks for ‘product x’ and if you have helped visitors to add your site to that social bookmarking site, you can gain extra traffic.
